Nursery Activity Ideas - Outdoor Footprint Patterns

This is a simple fun activity for children over the age of two, where they can create their own footprint patterns then watch them disappear.

You will need:

  • Shallow tray
  • Water

Activity:

This activity will work best on a warm, dry day. Fill the shallow tray with water and place it in the garden on an area not covered in grass. The children can step into the tray then walk across the floor leaving footprints behind them. The children can make patterns or paths across the floor, then watch them disappear in the sun.

With older children you can discuss why their footprints are disappearing, they can also make footprints and see how long it takes for them to disappear.

Areas of learning covered:

  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World
  • Language, Literacy and Communication skills
  • Personal and Social development
  • Creative development
