Childrens Rooms

Nursery Activity Ideas - Shape Sponge Painting

This is a fun activity suitable for children of all ages. However older children can use this to become more familiar with the shapes and also be introduced to new ones.

You will need:

  • Paints in a variety of colours
  • Paint trays
  • Paper
  • Shape sponges

Activity:

Dip the sponges into the paint and press onto the paper, using the shapes to make a picture. As the children make their colourful pictures they can talk about the shapes they have used, which will increase their familiarity with them, but will also help them learn new shape names. Colours the children are using could also be discussed during the activity.

If you find you do not have enough shape sponges or not the desired shapes, why not make your own, by cutting a thin kitchen sponge into the desired shape.

Areas of learning covered:

  • Mathematical development
  • Creative development
  • Language, Literacy and Communication skills
