Nursery Activity Ideas - Moving House Role Play

Moving house can be a difficult or unsettling time for some children, this simple role play activity can help older children understand about moving home. They will also be able to express their feelings through play.

You will need:

  • Home corner
  • Boxes of various sizes
  • Tea sets
  • Dressing up clothes
  • Books
  • Other toys

Activity:

Set up the home corner with tea sets in the cupboards etc, and a variety of toys and other items such as clothes and shoes. Talk to the children about what you might do when moving house such as packing boxes and loading a van. Let the children use various size boxes to pretend they are moving house and let them pack up the objects within the home corner and using their imaginations move them to a new house.

You may want to interact with the children at some points to discuss their new house and their new bedroom etc, things that the children can relate to. Discussions with the children (which will depend on their age and circumstances for example) can help them to feel more settled if they are going through this transition themselves.

Areas of learning covered:

  • Language, Literacy and Communication skills
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World
  • Personal and Social development
