Nursery Activity Ideas - Make Sensory Bottle Weights

This activity can be used to teach children about weight and early mathematical language in a fun self guided activity.

You will need:

  • Bottles
  • Glue
  • Sand
  • Earth
  • Butttons or Beads
  • Water
  • Feathers
  • Polystyrene balls
  • Any other items of your choice

Activity:

Half fill the bottles with each of the above materials and glue on the lids. Other bottles can be made using a variety of other materials and different levels of material within the bottle.

The children can hold the bottles and feel the weights using early language such as heavy heavier, light and lighter. Introduce the children to a balance scales and explain how they work. Then let the children explore together putting the bottles on the balance and finding new objects to weight.

Children can enjoy this activity as it is self guided learning so they are learning about weights and early maths as they play.
