This can be a fun, messy activity for children of all ages. This outdoor activity can also be adapted so it can be used indoors.
You will need:
- Large tray
If your setting has a large garden and it is possible to dig a small hole then the activity can be done this way, if not fill a large fairly shallow tray with earth. Add water to the earth to make the mud, and allow the children to splash in the mud in their wellies. By using a tray in does mean this activity can be enjoyed indoors, although you would need lino flooring or at least a lot of protective sheeting over any carpeted areas.
Older children can be involved in making the mud themselves, where you can talk to the children about how mud is made naturally. They can also wash their own wellies and hands afterwards, learning about hygiene while promoting independence.
